Barker Dam

The National Park Service gives the loop as 1.1 miles and 30 to 60 minutes. It starts on compact dirt, then gets rougher over granite steps and boulders, with a tight squeeze before the trail drops into a sandy wash. It’s relatively level overall, but the rocky sections make it a poor fit for strollers; the route isn’t wheelchair accessible.

Despite the name, the reservoir is typically dry and may fill after heavy rain. When there is water, still pools mirror the granite; when it’s dry, the wide basin and dam wall show how ranchers made use of scarce desert water. Don’t plan around seeing a lake.

The dam belongs to the area’s ranching story. A history of the area credits the Keys family with raising the wall to store water for cattle and irrigation. A cattle trough and a scratched family inscription remain by the wall, small reminders that this was working infrastructure.

Signs along the loop explain the dam and the plants, animals, and people of the desert. The rock art site is a highlight; view it from the marked stop and leave the rock art untouched. The surrounding Joshua trees, boulder formations, and plant life are a big part of the walk, too.

Trailhead parking and accessible restrooms serve the walk, but the rocky route itself isn’t accessible to wheelchairs. The trail is listed year-round; summer temperatures can reach 100°F, and the park recommends at least a liter of water per person. The lot can get crowded on weekends, so an early start makes parking easier. Pets aren’t allowed; service animals are.
