Pros & cons
PROS
- Easy, short walk right off the Kakadu Highway
- Picnic tables with wide views over Goodparla Station
CONS
- Views are modest compared to Kakadu’s big-name lookouts
- No toilets or water on site
Overview
Bukbukluk is a quick roadside lookout that breaks up the long drive through southern Kakadu. A short signed path leads to a low, open vantage with sweeping views across the old Goodparla Station and the park’s rolling southern ridges. It’s more of a pleasant pause than a headline act—and that’s exactly how to use it.
What You'll See
- Broad savanna and sandstone ridgelines of southern Kakadu
- The pastoral landscape of historic Goodparla Station
- Quiet, open bush views rather than dramatic escarpments
Why Stop Here
If you’re already cruising the Kakadu Highway, this is an easy stretch-your-legs stop with a picnic spot and a bit of context for the country you’re driving through. It’s peaceful, rarely busy, and a nice reset before or after the bigger sights further north.
Wildlife
Keep an eye out for birdlife around the scrub, including the pheasant coucal (the lookout’s namesake). Travellers occasionally report seeing brumbies and even the odd wild donkey near the track.
Facilities
Expect basics: a small carpark, picnic tables, and a short loop walk to the viewpoint. There are no toilets, water, or services—plan accordingly.
How Long It Takes
The loop is short—most visitors are in and out within 10–15 minutes, plus time for a snack.
Best Time to Visit
- Early morning or late afternoon: softer light, better for bird activity and photos.
- Midday can be harsh and flat; swing by then only if you need a break.
- It’s a quick stop any day of the week; crowds are rarely an issue.
A Note on the Name
“Bukbukluk” comes from the pheasant coucal, known locally as “bukbuk,” a nice cultural touchpoint for this quiet corner of the park.
