What to expect

This is a very short, easy out-and-back from a small carpark to a broad lookout over southern Kakadu. It’s about 0.5 miles (800 m) total return, typically 10–15 minutes with minimal effort. Think leg-stretch, not a hike.

Scenery and vibe

The payoff is a wide, big-sky panorama across the country of the old Goodparla Station and the park’s southern hills and ridges—classic savannah woodland and open country. It’s peaceful and usually uncrowded, best enjoyed as a quiet break rather than a destination walk.

Accessibility and facilities

The path is flat and well‑maintained. The first 50–100 m to the picnic tables is wheelchair‑friendly; beyond that it’s standard compacted dirt/gravel. Facilities are minimal: picnic tables and a shaded parking area. There are no toilets here.

Wildlife to watch for

Birding is the quiet star. The lookout’s name nods to the pheasant coucal (“bukbuk”). Keep an eye out for treecreepers and the endemic hooded parrot, plus occasional wallabies—and even brumbies or donkeys in the area.

Best time to go

Open year‑round. Go early or late in the day for softer light, cooler temps, and more active birdlife. In the wet season the views turn greener, but always check current access updates before you roll in.

Is it worth it?

If you’re cruising the Kakadu Highway and want a quick scenic stop with a picnic table, yes. If you’re chasing dramatic escarpment lookouts, you’ll find more impact at places like Nawurlandja or Mirray. Set expectations accordingly.

Tips

Bring water, sun protection, and insect repellent. Shade is limited at the lookout. This is a short stop—plan your restroom break elsewhere.
