Safety and facilities

The Kalamina Gorge access car park, off Banjima Drive West, has an information shelter, drinking water and toilets; those facilities are at the start, not down by the pool. Flash floods can occur, so do not enter a gorge if rain is in the area and leave immediately if rain starts. Gorge pools can be extremely cold, especially from April through September; do not dive or jump.

“Kalamina Gorge is coming up, with a short, steep descent to a small waterfall and permanent pool. For a quick visit, allow about half an hour, including the climb back out. Look for fish in the rock pools.”

Rock Arch Pool is a natural stream pool at the downstream end of Kalamina Gorge in Karijini, known for the rock arch and banded red walls around it. The five-minute descent from the access car park reaches a small upper pool; continue downstream if Rock Arch Pool is your goal.

The full walkThe route to the pool is about 3 km and takes up to three hours return.

The route to the pool is about 3 km and takes up to three hours return. It starts with a steep descent, then follows the stream past pools and banded walls, with stream crossings and some ledge walking. If you only have time for the short descent, treat the upper pool as its own stop; the arch is the payoff for going farther.

The rock and the viewThe gorge's horizontal bands rise above the water along the walk.

The gorge's horizontal bands rise above the water along the walk. Karijini's gorge landscape has been carved by erosion from rock more than 2.5 billion years old. At Rock Arch Pool, look for the arch above the water; including the pool in the foreground gives a photo a sense of the walls enclosing it.
