Weano Gorge Lookout

Overview

This rim stop peers straight into the heart of Karijini’s canyon country. From the lookouts above Weano you’ll gaze over the dramatic junction where Weano, Red, Joffre and Hancock gorges converge—sheer, iron‑rich walls dropping toward ribbon‑thin creeks and plunge pools. It’s one of the park’s most commanding viewpoints and a perfect add‑on before or after a gorge walk.

What You’ll See

Expect towering, well‑bedded chasms up to around 100 m deep, with rock bands glowing red‑orange and pools shading from jade to deep blue. The big draw is that multi‑gorge panorama; each direction frames a different slice of sculpted walls, ledges and shadowed slots.

Getting There & Facilities

You’ll access the viewpoint via the Weano Recreation Area on the park’s western side. There’s a main day‑use area with shaded seating, barbecues, information shelter and toilets, plus a smaller car park closer to the Oxer and Junction Pool lookouts. Facilities are at the picnic area—not at the lookouts—so top up on bathroom breaks there and carry all your water.

Safety Snapshot

Cliff edges are unforgiving—stay well back and supervise kids. Avoid gorges during rain due to flash‑flood risk, and remember pools can be extremely cold. If you’re pairing this with a Lower Weano or Hancock descent, don’t start within two hours of sunset and be ready for slippery, uneven rock.

Best Time to Visit

Late autumn through early spring brings the most pleasant conditions; winter days are typically clear while nights can be cold. For photos, late afternoon light warms the walls from the rim, while mid‑morning reduces glare if you’re heading into the gorges afterward. Arrive earlier on busy days to snag parking near the lookouts.

Wildlife Notes

The broader park supports red kangaroos, rock‑wallabies, echidnas, dingoes, and a host of reptiles and small marsupials. Most are shy or nocturnal, so you’re more likely to spot tracks and hear birdsong from the rim than meet the residents in daylight.
