Fit hikers often take 60–90 minutes, but plan up to 3 hours if water is high or you like to linger.
Route Snapshot
Start from the Weano Gorge car park and descend sturdy metal ladders to the gorge floor. Work along wet ledges and shallow pools through sculpted, vividly banded rock. The corridor tightens into the Spider Walk—move deliberately, maintain three points of contact, and keep your pack trim. The signed chain at Kermits Pool is the public turnaround; beyond is restricted and requires expert guidance. Return the same way.
What It Feels Like
This is a hands-on scramble with frequent wading and, at times, short swims depending on levels. Surfaces are polished and slippery. The gorge stays shaded and the pools are notably cold—thrilling in the right mindset, miserable if you’re underprepared. Grippy water/reef shoes beat bulky boots here, and a small dry bag for your phone/keys is worth its weight.
Geology and Country
You’re moving through some of the park’s oldest rocks—striking banded formations dating back over 2.5 billion years. Hancock Gorge sits on the traditional lands of the Banyjima, Innawonga, and Kurrama people; treat the place with care and respect.
Best Time to Hike
Aim for the cooler, drier window of June–August. Avoid entering gorges in rain or when storms threaten—flash flooding is a real hazard. Start with ample daylight; shaded water and cool rock can sap heat quickly.
