Challenging

Handrail Pool is a dramatic slot within Weano Gorge that rewards a short, technical out‑and‑back with a chill‑inducing swim. It’s a 1.5 km return (total) outing that starts easy in Lower Weano before tightening into slick rock, boulders, and a steel handrail descent into the namesake pool. Expect to get wet and expect cold water—this is a small hike with big adventure.
From the Weano Recreation Area carpark, follow steps down to the gorge floor between towering tiers of banded iron formation—rocks shaped over billions of years. The Lower Weano section begins as a Class 3 walk, then quickly earns its Class 5 reputation: narrow passages, boulder scrambles, and slippery ledges. The final drop to the pool uses a fixed handrail; maintain three points of contact and take your time. Many hikers wade or swim at the pool’s edge before turning around to retrace their steps.
April–October is the sweet spot: cooler temps, better light in the gorge, and less storm risk. Water stays cold even in warm weather; between April and September it can be bracing enough to shorten your stop. Summer brings heat and potential storms—start very early or save this for cooler months.
Allow about 2 hours return, factoring in careful down‑climbing and time at the pool. Roads into this part of the park include unsealed stretches; conditions vary and may close after heavy rain—check before you go. Wear grippy footwear you’re happy to soak, pack a small dry bag for keys/phone, and carry plenty of water. Flash floods are a real hazard: don’t enter if rain is around, and leave immediately if it starts. Rocks are extremely slippery; never jump or dive. Do not proceed beyond Handrail Pool. Dogs aren’t permitted. Facilities (toilets, shaded seating, barbecues, information shelter) are at the Weano picnic area.
If you want a less technical taste of the area, Upper Weano is shorter and easier. For a big‑picture payoff with minimal effort, pair this walk with Oxer Lookout and Junction Pool Lookout nearby—stunning viewpoints that complement the close‑up gorge adventure.
Park at the Weano Recreation Area day‑use carpark; the trail starts from the information shelter/steps into Lower Weano Gorge.
Class 5 terrain with slick, wet rock and a handrail down‑climb; expect wading and very cold water. Real flash‑flood risk—avoid during rain and exit immediately if it starts. Do not proceed beyond Handrail Pool; never jump or dive. Access roads are partly unsealed and may close after heavy rain.
