Junction Pool Lookout

Overview

This is the quick-hit viewpoint you come to Karijini for. From Junction Pool Lookout you’re peering into the meeting country of the park’s gorges, with layered banded iron formations dropping to water far below. The view looks up Hancock Gorge and down to distant Junction Pool, while nearby Oxer Lookout shows the full convergence of Hancock, Weano, Joffre and Red gorges.

Trail description

From the Weano Recreation Area, follow the formed Class 2 track to the lookout. The return distance to visit Junction Pool Lookout (and continue a short way to Oxer Lookout on the same path) is about 800 m total—roughly 0.5 miles—and takes at least 30 minutes. Between the two lookouts the path narrows, the surface can be loose, and there are steps and minor obstacles, so keep your footing tidy and don’t rush.

Facilities and access

You can start from the main Weano Recreation Area carpark, which has an information shelter, toilets, shaded seating and barbecues. There’s also a smaller carpark closer to the lookouts if you want to shorten the walk. The route has steps and uneven ground and isn’t suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

Best time to hike

Aim for the cooler, drier months—roughly April to October—for comfortable walking and the best light on the rock layers at sunrise or late afternoon. Guided tours generally run in this season, and the visitor centre typically operates limited hours (often around 9:00–16:00) and closes from early December to early February. Midday heat can be intense; go early or late.

Safety and etiquette

Cliff edges can be unstable—stay behind railings and well back from the rim. Summer temperatures can exceed 40°C; carry plenty of water and protect from the sun. Never enter gorges if rain is forecast; flash flooding is real. Gorge pools are very cold, especially April–September—don’t jump or dive. Some areas in other gorges are Class 6 (restricted); stay on signed trails. Blue asbestos occurs in Yampire and Wittenoom Gorges—avoid disturbing dust in those areas.

If this view whets your appetite, Upper Weano Gorge (Class 4) leads to a large swimming pool, while Lower Weano to Handrail Pool and Hancock Gorge are Class 5 scrambles suited to experienced, well-prepared walkers. If you just want another top-drawer vista with minimal effort, continue to Oxer Lookout on the same track.
