Cedar Grove Overlook

Overview

Cedar Grove Overlook via Hotel Creek is a short, steep out-and-back that trades shade for sweeping reward. Expect a sustained climb on 33 switchbacks up the canyon wall to a rocky perch with wide views over the Kings River, Cedar Grove, and surrounding granite cliffs. Recent tracks commonly measure about 4.4 miles round trip with roughly 1,600 feet of gain; the route includes a signed spur to the overlook near the top. It’s strenuous and largely exposed, so timing and prep matter.

Route

Start at the Hotel Creek Trailhead behind Cedar Grove Lodge. Shortly after beginning, pass a split with the Lewis Creek Connector—go right to remain on Hotel Creek as it switchbacks upward through manzanita and scattered pine, with expanding canyon vistas. At around 1.8 miles, reach the signed junction for Cedar Grove Overlook and turn left for the final 0.4 miles to the viewpoint. Return the same way. For a longer day, you can link Hotel Creek and Lewis Creek for a loop of roughly 7.7–8 miles.

What You’ll See

From the overlook, you’re looking into a classic glacially carved valley: a U-shaped canyon with sheer granite walls and the meandering Kings River below. It’s a great vantage to appreciate the Sierra Nevada’s granitic landscape and the entire Cedar Grove basin, with a broad, airy feel from high above the canyon floor.

Best Time to Hike

Start early to beat heat on this sun-exposed, south-facing climb. Sunset is a favorite for soft, golden light on the cliffs; if you aim for evening, bring a headlamp and an extra layer for the descent. Access to Cedar Grove is seasonal (typically late spring into fall), so check the road status before you go. Crowds are generally light compared with other Cedar Grove trails.

Logistics and Tips

Parking is small but convenient near the lodge, and usually not as busy as other trailheads. Carry plenty of water and solid sun protection—a hooded sun shirt is ideal on hot days. Parts of the route pass through the 2024 Happy Fire burn, where you may encounter downed trees and unstable snags; don’t linger in burned sections. Cell service is spotty. No pets are allowed on park trails. Bear spray is not permitted; store food properly and stay alert for wildlife. Paper maps are available at area visitor centers. If you’re hiking at sunset, pack a reliable headlamp.

Is It Worth It?

If you like a quick, hard climb for a big view, this is an underrated Cedar Grove gem. If you prefer shade or a gentler grade, the valley-floor options like Zumwalt Meadow or the stroll to Roaring River Falls may suit you better; for a longer challenge, consider Mist Falls or the Don Cecil Trail. Note: Cedar Grove Overlook (this hike) is not the same as the roadside Kings Canyon Overlook near Grant Grove.
