Boulders Bush Lodge

Overview

Boulders Bush Lodge is the SANParks-exclusive, book-the-whole-place option near Mopani in northern Kruger. It’s unfenced, private, and all about soaking up the bush in peace—think stilted chalets and wooden boardwalks wrapped around a boulder-strewn hill, with decks gazing over mopane plains and a private waterhole.

Setting and Layout

• Sleeps up to 12 in five units (one a family unit), all linked to a central thatched living/dining/bar area.
• Elevated walkways connect the chalets, giving you wildlife views and safe movement around camp.
• Multiple viewing decks face the plains and the waterhole, so “armchair game viewing” is part of the deal.

Amenities and What to Expect

• Self-catering only: a fully equipped communal kitchen (gas stove/oven, fridge/freezer, scullery), generous dining/lounge space, and braai facilities at each unit.
• Daily servicing by attendants keeps things tidy and stocked with basics.
• Power is solar: lights and fans work, but there are no standard plug points for appliances. Hot water and cooking are gas-based.
• There’s no on-site reception, no shop, no restaurant, and no cell phone reception. Mopani Rest Camp (about 25 km away) is your nearest hub for supplies and help.

Activities and Wildlife

• No activities run from the lodge itself, but you can pre-arrange guided morning/evening drives or guided walks via Mopani (subject to availability). Self-drive is excellent from here during gate hours.
• Classic northern Kruger mopaneveld surrounds the lodge, with rewarding birding and steady general game. “Five to look for” in this area: Buffalo, Tawny Eagle, Zebra, Giraffe, and Giant Eagle Owl.
• Don’t overlook the waterhole—night and dawn can be especially productive from the deck.

Getting There and Check-in

• Most guests enter via Phalaborwa Gate; the lodge is roughly 55 km inside the park and about 25 km south of Mopani Rest Camp (where check-in is typically handled). The drive can easily stretch with game-viewing stops, so plan accordingly.
• The lodge follows Mopani’s seasonal gate times. Arrive well before closing to avoid rushing the last stretch.

Need-to-Know

• It’s exclusive-use only—one group gets the entire lodge, max 12 people. It’s quiet, private, and not set up for day visitors.
• Power is limited. Bring power banks and headlamps; leave hairdryers and high-draw gadgets at home.
• Maintenance can be variable; if hot water is fussy, use other showers/taps or loop in Mopani.
• Name check: Don’t confuse this with similarly named lodges outside the public park network.

Best Time to Visit

• Game viewing is most active at first light and late afternoon—plan self-drives around those windows and keep an eye on the waterhole during the lull.
• For logistics, arrive earlier in the day to comfortably clear the gate, reach Mopani for check-in, and settle in before sunset lighting on the decks.
