Floodlit fence-side wildlife show you can watch over dinner
Overview
Satara’s floodlit waterhole is the camp’s built‑in night game drive—without leaving camp. Set just outside the perimeter fence near the restaurant, it’s an easy, low‑effort way to watch predators and other wildlife drift in after dark. It’s also one of the few main camps with a floodlit waterhole and a long‑running webcam, so you can get a feel for activity patterns in advance.

This area is classic big‑cat country: high lion and hyena presence, with leopard and cheetah activity in the broader surrounds. Expect hyenas to patrol the fence line and occasionally big cats to drink after dark. In the dry season at dusk, flocks of Double‑banded Sandgrouse swoop in to drink. Around camp you can also bump into African wild cats and even honey badgers on nighttime rounds. Raptors and vultures are common by day in the Satara area.
Head to the fence near the restaurant about 30–60 minutes before sunset and settle in. Bring binoculars; patience pays here. Keep quiet, avoid flash, and use a small torch only to mind your footing—don’t shine animals. If you’re out for the afternoon, swing past nearby waterholes (like Girivana) and be back in time for the dusk “show.”
There isn’t a dedicated facility at the waterhole itself—use the camp’s restrooms, shop, and restaurant a short walk away. Park in the camp area and walk to the fence. Day visitors can use facilities during gate hours; once gates close, only overnight guests remain inside. For comfort, consider a folding chair, a light jacket for winter evenings, and insect repellent.
The floodlights are great for viewing but create high contrast and the fence can complicate compositions. A fast lens helps; be respectful and never use flash.
