Set on a 15,000‑hectare private concession in the park’s southeast, Camp Shawu is an intimate five‑suite, semi‑tented lodge named for a legendary tusker. The camp faces the Mpanamana Dam, so a lot of the safari comes to you—elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocs, even lions, all visible from your deck. The vibe is rustic‑chic: authentic buffalo‑dung walls and vintage touches that lean into the bush setting rather than high‑gloss luxury.

You’ll head out on guided game drives in open vehicles each morning and late afternoon. This concession delivers classic Big Five potential along with prolific hippos, crocodiles, and excellent birding thanks to the dam. Guided bush walks are available on request, and you can self‑drive in the greater park between lodge activities if you want extra time out. Note that off‑road driving isn’t permitted here, and using public park roads can sometimes mean a bit more traffic.
Hippos can be noisy at night—many guests love the soundtrack, but bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. Reviews also mention some older furnishings, the occasional maintenance niggle, and practical quirks like hot‑water timing or small portions on some nights. Wi‑Fi is limited and not reliable. Children under 16 aren’t accommodated, keeping the atmosphere quiet and adult‑focused.
Most guests enter via Crocodile Bridge Gate and transfer by lodge vehicle from Shishangeni Main Lodge to Camp Shawu. Plan to arrive well before park gate closing and confirm transfer times and parking arrangements in advance. This is a malaria area—chat with your doctor about precautions.
