About Crooks Corner

At the far northern tip of the park, Crooks Corner sits where the Luvuvhu meets the Limpopo and three countries touch. The name comes from its early-1900s reputation as a frontier hideout—poachers and gun-runners could dodge authorities by stepping across a border. Today it’s a sandy, scenic point with a marker and big-sky river views rather than a dense game hotspot, and that’s precisely its charm: atmosphere, history, and wide, wild rivers.

Year-round works. Winter’s dry months reveal wide sandbanks on the Limpopo and often clearer sightings; summer brings lush greens but also heat, humidity, and higher, changeable river levels after rains. Go early or late in the day for cooler conditions and calmer viewing.

How to Visit

Think of Crooks Corner as a destination at the end of a day’s northern circuit. There are no facilities at the point itself—use Pafuri Picnic Site on the Luvuvhu for toilets, braai gear, and cold drinks before or after your visit. The approach roads are mostly gravel/sandy; take it slow for wildlife and to protect the riverine zones. If you’re basing at Punda Maria, it’s a long return outing, so start early, pack plenty of water, and fill up with fuel beforehand—there are no shops or fuel en route.
