Gudzani East Waterhole Viewpoint

Gudzani East sits on the S41 gravel link in the east of the central region, between the H6 (N’wanetsi) and the S90, north of the famed S100. A tried-and-true loop from Satara is H6 to N’wanetsi, up the S41 past Gudzani East, then back via the S100. For leg-stretches and loos, plan on the H6 picnic/viewpoints like N’wanetsi or Sweni.

Anything can pitch up here: all Big Five occur in the area (with rhino now rare). The open country east of Satara carries plenty of grazers—zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe—so lions and hyenas work the area. Birders should watch for seasonal carmine bee-eaters, blue waxbills, and black-crowned tchagra. Baboons and steenbok are regular roadside companions.

The waterhole is variable—sometimes full, sometimes not. It comes into its own late in the dry season when remaining water concentrates animals. After summer rains, grasses shoot up and can hide game for weeks, so expect tougher scanning then.

There are no on-site facilities; stay in your vehicle. The S41 is a sand/gravel road—take it slow, especially after rain. Camp and gate times vary by month; make sure your route fits within the daily driving window.

Park with the sun at your back and scan approach paths to the water. In summer, watch for bee-eaters hawking overhead; in the dry months, use dust trails and animal approach lines to build shots.

“Gudzani” translates to “early frost,” a nod to the area’s tendency to frost earlier and more heavily in winter. The nearby Gudzani Dam is an older concrete build from the 1950s, but its viewing is typically distant and often screened, making this eastern waterhole the better vantage.
