Malelane Gate

This gate feeds straight into wildlife-rich southern Kruger, making it a smart launch point for self-drives to Afsaal, Pretoriuskop, Skukuza, and the Crocodile River roads. It’s also convenient if you’re staying at Berg-en-Dal or Malelane Satellite Camp.

Before the gate, the high bridge over the Crocodile River is a reliable warm‑up for sightings—hippos and Nile crocodiles are regulars, with impalas and baboons along the banks. Inside, the southern woodlands and riverine corridors often produce big game.

• H3 to Skukuza (~64 km): Rolling hills and mixed woodland, with a classic stop at Afsaal and a detour to Mathekenyane (Granokop) for panoramas.
• H2-2 via Afsaal to Pretoriuskop (~34 km): Historic transport‑rider route that can turn up rhino, eland, and hyena.
• S110 Matjulu Loop (~23 km circuit): Mountain bushveld with varied game.
• S114/S25 along the Crocodile River to Crocodile Bridge (~141 km): Thorn thickets and riverine bush; stretches of the S25 have a cheetah reputation.

Expect classic southern diversity—elephants, buffalo, and plenty of plains game in mixed woodland. River sections produce hippo and crocs; predators are possible along open plains and river roads. After heavy summer rains, some gravel routes may be closed or rough; check gate notices.

• Arrive 15–30 minutes before opening in peak season to beat the initial rush; after 08:00 it’s usually quieter.
• Complete the Gate Registration & Indemnity form in advance and bring ID/passport for everyone in the vehicle.
• There isn’t a separate queue for pre-booked entries, so plan for lines during weekends and school holidays.
• You’ll pay conservation fees daily—there’s no paying for multiple days in one go.
• Brief vehicle searches are standard on entry and exit.

South of the gate lies Dumaneni, a major ancient ochre mine worked tens of thousands of years ago. The area also reflects Swazi heritage; in the 1850s, King Mswati II stationed a regiment here.
