This spot is known for regular elephant activity and occasional headline moments like rhino and even rare wild dog sightings. As with most dams, you’ve got a solid chance at water-associated species: hippos, Nile crocodiles, buffalo and common antelope filtering in, with predators more active around dawn and dusk.
Birders do well here. Watch and listen for African fish eagle, saddle-billed stork and multiple kingfisher species, alongside herons, jacanas and other waterbirds. Activity generally peaks in the dry season when water elsewhere is scarce, while summer can add migrant waterbirds.
This is not a designated picnic site or rest camp. There are no restrooms, no shop and no picnic tables. It’s typically just a small lay-by where you view from your vehicle—standard Kruger etiquette and safety apply.
A long lens helps (400mm+ is handy) and a polarizer can tame surface glare. Watch for reflection shots in calm water and backlit dust when herds arrive at golden hour. Park at an angle that keeps the sun over your shoulder, then settle in—rotating through vantage points and waiting often pays off.
