Phabeni Gate

If you’re coming via Hazyview and heading toward Skukuza, this is the smart entry. Outside the early-morning rush, many visitors find processing fast and efficient, especially if you arrive mid-morning with paperwork ready. Note that there’s no late admission here—once it closes, that’s it for the day.

The area around Phabeni sits on a “geological island” of gabbro amid granite koppies. Those dark clay soils grow sweeter grasses, pulling in grazers and browsers and giving you a strong chance of sightings within minutes of entering. Expect impala and kudu early, with giraffe common (and lion not far behind in these parts). Vegetation is a touch more open here, which helps with visibility. Knob-thorn acacias, marulas, and bushwillows dominate the tree mix.

• S1 Doispane Road → Skukuza (38 km, ~1.5 hrs, tar): Descends into Sabie thorn thickets and woodland savanna and is usually productive for game.
• S3 Albasini Road → Pretoriuskop (25 km, ~1 hr, gravel): Pretty kiaat terminalia woodlands with Lowveld views; more scenic than gamey.
• S3 Sabie River Road → toward Paul Kruger area (up to ~46 km, ~2 hrs mixed dust/tar): Lovely riverine birdlife and known for white rhino, but avoid after heavy rains in low-lying sections.

Within a short stroll of the gate are the Albasini Ruins, the remains of João Albasini’s 1840s trading outpost. The site hints at the grit required to live and trade in the Lowveld back then and ties this corner of the park to an important chapter in regional history.

• Restrooms: There are proper toilets at the gate; the adjacent Albasini picnic stop relies on these facilities.
• Food & maps: You may receive a basic map on entry, but stock can run out—grab a detailed one at Skukuza if needed. A small coffee stand sometimes operates here, but it’s not a full-time restaurant, so don’t bank on meals.
• Admin: Gate hours change seasonally; there is no late admission at Phabeni. Bring photo ID/passports and a completed Gate Registration & Indemnity form to speed things up. • Crowds & timing: Peak mornings (weekends, holidays) can mean queues. Arriving after the initial rush—around mid-morning—often makes for a smoother start while wildlife remains active near watercourses and shade lines.
