About Satara Rest Camp

Satara sits in central Kruger, smack in productive savanna that draws plains game—and the predators that follow them. It’s long been a magnet for lions, leopards, and cheetahs, which is why many travelers treat Satara as their cat-hunting base. The surrounding grasslands and the N’wanetsi drainage support big herds, so drives from camp can be action-packed.

Tips for visiting Satara Rest Camp

Perimeter bungalows along the fence are great for nighttime hyena activity.
If you plan to self-cater, bring utensils, plates, and basics for the communal kitchens.

Best time to visit

Dawn and dusk are prime for predators, especially in the drier months when game concentrates near water and visibility improves. Weekdays outside school holidays are your best bet for fewer crowds. For photography, expect softer golden light on late-afternoon loops; build in a midday break for a swim or a lazy lunch at the restaurant when heat and light are harsh.

Accommodation & Facilities

Expect options for every style and budget. There are 2–3 bed bungalows (some self-catering, others using communal kitchens), family-friendly guest cottages, larger guest houses, and a sizeable campsite with both powered and non-powered stands. Facilities cover the bases: reception and info desk, an on-site restaurant and deli, a well-stocked shop for groceries and braai essentials, a laundromat, a filling station, communal ablutions and kitchens, a swimming pool with children’s playground, a day-visitor picnic area with a boma, an Eco Information Centre with an amphitheatre, plus cellphone reception, a public phone and a post box. Reception can even supply cutlery/plate hampers and basic first aid.

If you want high odds of sightings with maximum convenience, this is the camp. Satara is one of the park’s largest, so you get all the practicalities—fuel, groceries, a proper restaurant, and a pool—without sacrificing access to great game-viewing loops. The tradeoff: it’s busier and less tranquil than some northern camps.

Satara’s central location makes it a good mid-park base. Orpen Gate is about 48 km away, and Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit) sits roughly 68 km from that gate. From Johannesburg, plan on about seven hours of driving to reach camp.
