Pros & cons
PROS
- Reliable wildlife magnet at a classic waterhole
- Easy roadside stop between Skukuza and Pretoriuskop
CONS
- No facilities of any kind
- You must remain in your vehicle
Overview
Transport Dam Viewpoint is a simple roadside pull‑off along the H1‑1 between Skukuza and Pretoriuskop, sometimes labeled as Vervoerdam. There’s no infrastructure here—just you, your vehicle, and a productive waterhole. It’s also the site made famous by the "Battle at Kruger" video, and it still delivers the kind of tense, wildlife‑comes‑to‑you viewing that clip suggests.
What You’ll See
This dam is a dependable draw, especially in the dry season. Expect regular elephant traffic (from playful swims to big herds), hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, hyena, and general plains game. Predators like lions do turn up, and rhinos are reported. Birding is strong: fish eagles are frequent, and storks, herons, ducks, raptors, and kingfishers work the margins. It’s the kind of place where patience pays—park, settle in, and let the action unfold.
Facilities and Rules
There are no toilets, picnic/braai spots, shops, or shelters here. It’s a signed turn‑off with space to pull over, and you must remain in your vehicle. Plan your comfort breaks and meals at official picnic sites or camps before and after your visit. Skukuza Rest Camp is roughly 24 km away; Pretoriuskop and Afsaal Picnic Site are other practical options depending on your route.
Best Time to Visit
Dawn and late afternoon are prime for both activity and light. In the dry months, traffic to the water peaks and sightings stack up; midday can be quieter and harsher for photography. Give yourself unhurried time—this isn’t a quick snap‑and‑go stop.
Trip Planning Tips
Build your loop to include a camp or picnic site for ablutions and a leg stretch. If you’d prefer a similar waterhole with amenities, Orpen Dam Lookout (a different site) offers toilets and a covered shelter while still delivering classic hippo/croc and waterbird viewing.
