Pros & cons

PROS

  • Quick, unique photo stop on the H1-6 between Mopani and Shingwedzi
  • Informative signage explaining the Tropic of Capricorn

CONS

  • No formal facilities at the marker
  • Very brief stop; not a destination on its own

Overview

This roadside marker is where the Tropic of Capricorn crosses the H1-6 between Mopani and Shingwedzi. It’s a classic stretch-your-legs, snap-a-photo stop with an information board explaining what the line means and why it matters.

What It Signifies

The Tropic of Capricorn marks the southernmost latitude where the sun can sit directly overhead at the December solstice. Earth’s axial tilt drifts slightly over time, so the line migrates north by roughly a few meters per year. The marker commemorates where that latitude intersects this road.

What to Expect

  • A simple roadside sign/marker with a short write-up about the Tropic.
  • Space to pull off to the side of the road, but no formal parking bays, restrooms, or shade.
  • A quick photo-op—think one foot “in the tropics,” one foot “in the temperate zone.”

Safety & Etiquette

Only alight where it’s explicitly permitted and always at your own risk. Keep your stop brief, stay near your vehicle, and scan the bush line—wildlife, including big predators, does move through this area. Don’t block traffic on the H1-6.

Wildlife

The H1-6 between Mopani and Shingwedzi is good general game country, especially at dawn and dusk. Drive slowly and keep an eye on riverine thickets and open bush along the road for sightings before or after your quick stop.

Nearby Facilities

There are no amenities at the marker. Use nearby rest camps or official picnic sites on your route for bathrooms, supplies, and longer breaks—Mopani and Shingwedzi are the logical bases on either side of the marker.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon offers softer light for photos and better wildlife activity along the H1-6. Midday is harsher for photography and heat, making this an even quicker in-and-out stop.
