Overview
Tshanga Viewpoint is a lonely rocky hill in the far north that serves up some of the most expansive views around. It’s one of the rare, signed spots where you’re allowed to step out of your vehicle—at your own risk—so the experience feels wilder and more personal than the standard roadside stop.
If you like your viewpoints raw and real—big views, few people, no frills—Tshanga is worth the detour. Come prepared, linger quietly, and let the landscape do the work.

From the crown you get 360-degree savanna vistas with a small river line below that often shrinks to pools in the dry season—natural magnets for game. Expect general plains wildlife from up high, with rock hyrax (dassies) darting among boulders. Sable antelope are possible in the broader area, and elevated perches are excellent for scanning for raptors riding midday thermals.
A short footpath leads from the tiny parking area through bush to the rocky top; shoes with decent grip help. Facilities are essentially absent: no water, no shop, no picnic setup, and the basic long-drop has been reported in poor condition. Bring everything you need and pack it out. Because the parking is hemmed in by bush, scan carefully before you walk, keep kids close, and be ready to return to the car quickly.
