Top of French Mountain

Overview

A short, moderately challenging climb leads to big, open views over Lake George, the Adirondacks, and the commercial strip below. It’s a locals’ favorite when you want a high reward without a half-day commitment.

Access and Route

The blue-blazed trail begins inside Lake George RV Park, and access is typically limited to guests or those with permission. Expect roughly 2 miles of hiking through mixed forest, with some rocky, cliffy sections near the top that open up the views. Stay on marked paths; the summit area borders private property and some hikers find the markings a bit fuzzy up high.

Views and Vibe

From the top, you’ll scan Lake George, its surrounding mountains, and the “Million Dollar Mile.” On clear evenings you can spot the rides of The Great Escape winking in the distance—sunset and early night bring out those valley lights. It’s generally less crowded than Prospect Mountain, so the vibe is more low-key.

Wildlife

You’re walking through healthy Adirondack foothill forest, so keep an eye out for songbirds, the occasional raptor, deer, and all the usual small mammals. Dawn and dusk are your best bets for sightings.

Best time to visit

• Weekdays or early mornings for solitude.
• Clear late afternoons into sunset for dramatic light and post-sunset valley glow.
• Late fall can offer long-range views once the leaves drop. Skip it right after heavy rain—the trail gets slick and muddy.

Know before you go

There are no facilities at the top. Bring water, layers, sturdy shoes, and a map/GPS. Respect private land boundaries—access rules can change as nearby conservation work (including French Mountain Park efforts) evolves. When in doubt, confirm permission before you go.
