Overview

Lake George’s flagship stretch of sand sits on 51 acres at the lake’s southern tip, with a long, groomed beach, mountain views, and famously clear water that shifts from turquoise nearshore to deep cobalt farther out. It’s state-run, meticulously maintained, and the go-to spot for a classic beach day in the village.

What You’ll Find

Expect lifeguard-supervised swimming, a large bathhouse with restrooms, showers, and changing rooms, plus concessions. There are picnic tables and grills, room for beach volleyball, and a big paid parking lot just behind the sand. The vibe is family-forward and tidy.

Boating Bonus

Right next door is a busy state boat launch with mandatory inspection and a wash station—super convenient if you’re planning to get out on the water. Note that the launch is popular and fills early on peak days.

The Tradeoffs

This place is beloved—and it shows. Crowds swell on sunny summer weekends. Rules are enforced: lifeguards keep a tight, shallow swim zone, and floaties/tubes are not allowed in the water. Shade is limited, so plan your own.

History Snapshot

Opened in 1951 at a cost of about a million dollars (hence the name), the beach was created by hauling in sand to build a premier public swimming area. A modern bathhouse followed in the late 1980s.

Best Time to Visit

• Weekdays or early mornings for easy parking and a prime patch of sand.
• Late afternoon for softer light and thinner crowds.
• Swim only when lifeguards are on duty; sections may close if staffing is limited.

What to Bring

Sunscreen, towels, a beach umbrella or pop-up for shade, picnic supplies, and a few singles for parking. If you’re boating, be ready for inspection and arrive early.
