Million Dollar Beach

Million Dollar Beach is a 51-acre state-run swimming beach and day-use area on Lake George’s southern shore, within walking distance of the village. It’s a good pick if you want a few hours on the sand: there’s designated swimming, beach volleyball and picnic space, with open lake and mountain views. Give it time to feel like a beach day rather than a quick photo stop.

Swimming is allowed only in the designated area and only while a lifeguard is on duty. Visitors often find the roped zone shallow and short, which suits supervised shallow-water play but can feel limiting if you want to swim laps or head farther out. Plan on a managed beach swim, not open-water swimming.

The beach has a volleyball court, picnic tables and grills. The beach house has restrooms, changing rooms and showers, and picnic tables and grills are first come, first served. A wheelchair-accessible route reaches the beach; beach wheelchairs are available first come while lifeguards are on duty. Pets are prohibited at DEC day-use areas.

Food concessions are reported at the beach, though a stable menu or signature item isn’t established. Treat them as a convenient beach-day option, not a particular meal to plan around. The public boat launch, boat inspection station and boat wash are adjacent but separate from the swimming area. The launch operates through boating season, from ice-out until the lake freezes.

The beach opened in 1951, and its name refers to the reported $1 million construction cost. That story gives the name a practical origin: it was a major public recreation project, not a nickname for the scenery.

A multi-component archaeological site lies beside the waterfront. Archaeologists found intact soil layers under some of the fill used for roads and parking, which helped preserve deposits in place. Prehistoric artifacts also turned up in the fill and may have come from another site, so their exact origin here isn’t established.

From the sand, include a strip of shoreline in the foreground with the water and mountain backdrop beyond it. The sand makes the picture read as a beach visit, instead of another lake view.
