Overview

Tucked in the Newberry Mountains near Searchlight and Cottonwood Cove, the Homestake Group Mine is a historic mining site inside the Lake Mohave side of the recreation area. It isn’t a developed attraction—no restrooms, no water, no trailhead—just an abandoned mine landscape managed for safety and wildlife. Expect to observe it from a distance; many openings are gated to protect bats and the public.

Why It Matters

Homestake is notable as a rare mine site in the area recognized on the National Register of Historic Places (listed in 1985). It’s a quiet, no-frills stop that gives you a feel for the region’s mining past without the crowds or commercialization.

History Snapshot

Gold- and silver-bearing claims here were part of the Newberry Mining District. NPS sources note mining began in the 1860s and was active into the 1930s, with some summaries indicating work continued into the early 1950s. The workings tapped vein-hosted precious metals in the district, including what’s referred to as the Silver King Vein.

What You’ll See (and What You Won’t)

You’ll find an abandoned mine setting with access restricted—treat all openings as closed. There are no tours or on-site exhibits, and you won’t find clear wayfinding. Consider this a quick historical look-around rather than a destination hike.

Wildlife

Old mines across the recreation area provide critical bat habitat—at least 19 species are recorded park-wide. Around Lake Mohave corridors, visitors also encounter roadrunners, Gambel’s quail, and, in the right season, desert tortoise; bighorn sheep are sometimes seen along the river corridor. Keep your distance and never disturb gates or structures.

Safety and Access

There is no signed, maintained NPS trail to the Homestake workings. Heat is extreme much of the year—carry ample water, start early, and know your limits. Do not enter any mine openings and obey all closures and gates. Nearest services are around Cottonwood Cove or in the towns of Searchlight and Laughlin.

Alternatives Nearby

If you want a sanctioned historical hike with good views, try Liberty Bell Arch (history plus scenery) or the Lake View Trail at Katherine Landing—both established options with clearer access.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and softer light. Because this isn’t a developed site, daylight hours are the safest window for any exploring from a distance.
