Hoover Dam Memorial

Overview

This memorial bridge plaza on the Nevada side is the easiest way to get that wide, dramatic look at Hoover Dam. From the parking area, a short, paved walk leads up to the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge walkway, where you can gaze straight down the Colorado River and across to the dam’s concrete face. It’s the iconic vantage point most people picture—without needing to enter the dam complex itself.

What You’ll See

From the bridge walkway, expect sweeping views of Black Canyon, the dam’s crest and spillways, and the turquoise ribbon of the Colorado River downstream. It’s a fantastic spot for big-picture photos and to appreciate the scale of the engineering against stark desert rock.

Facilities and Nearby Options

At the bridge plaza, restrooms are the vault/portable type—useful, but basic—so plan ahead and bring water. If you continue to the dam complex (run by the Bureau of Reclamation), you’ll find flush restrooms in the Nevada-side parking garage (bus level) and in main visitor facilities. Prefer a mellow desert stroll nearby? The Historic Railroad Trail within Lake Mead NRA has pit/vault toilets at the lower trailhead, and drinking water is available up the hill at the Lake Mead Visitor Center.

Planning Tips

• Heat rules the day here. Start early or come late to avoid the worst of the sun, especially in summer.
• The memorial bridge viewpoint pairs well with a dam visit (tours are administered separately by the Bureau of Reclamation).
• Facility status can change; checking Lake Mead NRA’s current conditions before you go is wise.

Best Time to Visit

October–April brings the most comfortable walking weather. In hotter months, aim for early morning or late afternoon for cooler temps and softer light. Weekdays generally feel quieter than weekends, and arriving earlier helps with parking and elbow room on the bridge.
