Hoover Dam

Overview

Hoover Dam is the park’s headliner—an Art Deco giant wedged into Black Canyon with sweeping views of Lake Mead and the Colorado River. You can stroll the dam deck for close‑up scale, then pop into the Visitor Center for exhibits and an observation deck. If you want the postcard shot from above, the pedestrian walkway on the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge serves it up.

What to Do

• Walk the dam deck for river‑to‑lake perspectives and the classic Art Deco details.
• Visitor Center: exhibits, an observation deck, and a self‑guided experience.
• Tours (paid): the Guided Powerplant Tour takes you into tunnels, penstocks, and the Nevada Powerhouse; the Guided Dam Tour goes deeper through historic shafts and inspection tunnels and includes the powerplant experience.
• Bridge Walkway: park at the memorial bridge plaza and walk the short path for that big aerial view down on the dam.
• Arizona Lookout (Lot 12): free parking, panoramic viewpoint with shade, seating, coin‑op telescopes, and a small refreshments trailer; note that restrooms here are portable toilets only.

Tours & Tickets (know before you go)

• Guided Dam Tour: $40 per person; tickets sold on‑site only and include the powerplant portion.
• Guided Powerplant Tour: $25 adults, $15 ages 4–16; purchasable online or upgraded on‑site.
• Self‑Guided Visitor Center: $15 per person.

Interagency passes aren’t accepted for these—Hoover Dam tours/VC are self‑funded.

Hours & Seasonal Notes

• Dam access: daily 5:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m.
• Visitor Center and tours: daily 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
• Winter maintenance: from December 1 to February 27, weekday nights close public access 7:00 p.m.–5:00 a.m.

Parking, Food & Facilities

• Nevada side: the main parking garage (near the Visitor Center) is $10 and has full facilities, including restrooms and a café.
• Oversize vehicles/RVs/trailers: park on the Arizona side in designated lots (some free, some $10).
• Arizona Lookout: portable toilets (bring hand sanitizer) and shade; for running water and full facilities, use the Nevada side.
• Tip for drivers: reach the Arizona Lookout via US‑93; don’t rely on the old Kingman Wash Access Road spur—it’s been closed to the public for years.

Security & What to Bring

Expect airport‑style screening before buying tour tickets. Leave prohibited items (weapons, knives, explosives, fireworks, drones, marijuana) in your car or at home. Bottled water is fine; don’t plan to eat or drink inside buildings. Bring sun protection and water—heat builds fast here, and the bridge walkway can be windy.

Best Time to Visit

Go early (arrive by 9 a.m.) or late afternoon for cooler temps, softer light, and thinner crowds. Midday sun blasts the concrete and flattens photos. Weekdays are easier than weekends. For the bridge overlook, late afternoon side‑light pops the textures on the dam face.

How Much Time Do You Need?

• 60–90 minutes: walk the dam, browse the exhibits, and grab the bridge viewpoint.
• 2–3 hours: add a Powerplant or Dam Tour for the full inside story.
