Overview

The Makarora River Swing Bridge is the first suspension bridge on the short, easy Blue Pools Track. It hangs high above the glacier-fed Makarora, giving that classic swaying-bridge thrill with clear views into the turquoise current and forested gorge. It’s a simple stop that feels special—an elevated vantage without committing to a long hike.

What You’ll See

  • Beech and podocarp forest opening to a braided, glacier-fed river whose rock flour scatters light into blue-green hues.
  • A second swing bridge further along the track doubles as a viewing platform over the Blue Pools, if you want to extend the stroll.

Getting There & The Walk

Start at the signed Blue Pools car park on State Highway 6, opposite Cameron Flat. The track is well formed with boardwalk sections and gentle grades. Most visitors treat it as a short out-and-back, allowing 30–60 minutes depending on photos and crowds. Toilets are at the trailhead; there are none along the track, and there are no bins—pack out all rubbish.

Best Time to Visit

Late morning to mid‑afternoon on sunny days brings out the vivid blue/green color best. After heavy rain the river can turn grey‑green and lose clarity. For fewer people, go early or late in the day; bridge capacity limits can create brief queues at peak times.

Wildlife

Listen for yellowhead/mohua in the canopy. In the river you may spot trout in the clear pools, and with luck, blue duck/whio on fast riffles. Enjoy the birdsong but don’t feed wildlife.

Safety & Etiquette

Weather turns quickly—carry layers. The water is extremely cold and swift; do not jump from the bridges. Drones require a permit on public conservation land. After storms or maintenance, closures can occur—respect any signs. Sandflies can be fierce: bring repellent and cover up.

Make It a Longer Walk

If you’re not done yet, continue over the second bridge for Blue Pools views, or branch onto longer options that start here: the Blue‑Young Link Track (about 7 km return) or the Blue Valley Track toward Camp Flat and beyond. These move into backcountry terrain and can involve avalanche risk in season and serious river considerations—only continue if prepared and experienced.

Pros

  • Big river-and-gorge views from a high suspension bridge
  • Quick, family-friendly walk from the SH6 car park

Cons

  • Bridge capacity limits can mean short waits at busy times
  • Water loses its vivid color after rain or in flat light

Tips

  • Aim for a sunny late morning to make the river pop blue-green.
  • Expect brief queues due to bridge capacity—wait your turn for photos.
  • Bring sandfly repellent and consider long sleeves.
  • Toilets are only at the car park; there are no bins—pack out rubbish.
  • After storms the water turns murky and closures are possible—check DOC notices.
