Trail Details
The track is an out‑and‑back, roughly 0.2 miles (0.3 km) total with about 26 feet (8 m) of gentle gain. The path is well‑formed through forest, then the final steps onto the riverbed are rocky. You view the waterfall from the near side of the Haast River; there’s no bridge, and crossing is not recommended—the river is fast‑flowing and conditions change quickly. Expect anywhere from a 5‑minute leg‑stretch to 30–60 minutes if you linger for photos.
Getting There & Parking
The signed car park sits right off State Highway 6 between Wānaka and Haast, about 85–87 km north of Wānaka. If you’re northbound from Wānaka, the turnoff is on your right. The highway is sealed, but the car park is small and can fill at busy times; arrive early or be patient.
What You’ll See
Fantail Falls fans beautifully over bedrock into the Haast River, an easy win on a big driving day. On the riverbed you may notice stacked rock cairns. In the surrounding forest and valleys, keep an ear out for bellbird and an eye out for South Island fantail and New Zealand pigeon; blue duck frequent river systems in the area.
Best Time to Visit
This is a year‑round, quick stop. Midday or overcast light works well to avoid harsh shadow on the falls. After rain, water levels rise and rocks get slick—take extra care. Sandflies can be intense whenever it’s calm and warm; cover up and use repellent.
Know Before You Go
There are no toilets at the car park; the nearest facilities are about 10 km north at Pleasant Flat Campsite. Drone use on public conservation land requires prior authorization. Pack out all rubbish and resist the urge to wade—your best view is right from the near side.
