Cameron Flat Campsite is a classic DOC Standard site on open river flats beside the Makarora River, about 15 minutes north of Makarora on SH6. It’s all about the setting: huge mountain backdrops and easy access to nearby walks, with the Blue Pools area just across the highway. Expect a simple, scenic stop rather than a full‑service holiday park.

What You’ll Find

• Around 30 unpowered tent/vehicle sites on hard ground, some flatter than others—arrive early for the prime, level spots.
• Non‑flush (long‑drop) toilets and a water supply; boil/treat before drinking.
• A basic picnic/wind shelter with a bench/sink for cooking and dishes.
• Sealed road to the toilet area, then gravel beyond. No dogs (DOC‑managed site).

Vibe and Trade‑offs

The views get rave reviews, but bring your A‑game for sandflies—multiple visitors call them next‑level here. A few reviews mention occasional night noise (e.g., nearby equipment/generator) and past rodent activity; store food securely and keep things tidy.

Nearby and Activities

You’re well placed for tramping and day walks, fishing, and general sightseeing. The Blue Pools track is close by (the bridge has been closed at times), and the Brewster Track trailhead is in the area. Hunting and scenic flights are also popular in the wider region.

Booking, Fees, and How It Works

• Online booking is required year‑round. Bookings are currently open through 30 June 2026.
• Per‑night fees: Adult NZD $15; Child (5–17) $7.50; Infants (0–4) free. DOC Campsite Pass is accepted, but you still need to book online. Phone/in‑person bookings incur a $10 service fee.
• You’ll either select a site on arrival or be assigned one.

Important Notices (Late 2025)

• Temporary closure: midday Friday 21 November to Monday 24 November 2025 for a predator‑control operation using the campsite as a base.
• A wider predator‑control programme is planned for November/December 2025 with a non‑toxic prefeed followed by a 1080 bait drop. Check DOC advisories for updates and any short‑term restrictions.

Best Time to Visit

Show up earlier in the day to snag a flatter spot and settle in before evening. If you’re visiting in late November–December 2025, double‑check current notices due to predator‑control operations. Bring solid insect repellent or a head net—dawn and dusk can be especially buggy.
