Van Trump Park

Overview

Van Trump Park is a high, flower‑rich subalpine meadow perched above Comet Falls. On clear days you’re face‑to‑face with the southern flanks of Rainier, with meadows unfolding between avalanche paths and old‑growth patches. It’s a rewarding destination for hikers who don’t mind earning their views.

The Route and Effort

You’ll start from the Comet Falls/Van Trump Park corridor and climb steadily past waterfalls and along Van Trump Creek before breaking into the meadows. Expect a moderate-to-strenuous outing with significant elevation gain and a sustained grade. Portions of the route higher up toward Mildred Point are noted as unmaintained, so most people make the meadows their turnaround unless conditions and experience justify going farther.

What You’ll See

The approach is waterfall‑forward: Comet Falls is among the park’s most striking, plunging in a long, clean drop framed by dark volcanic rock. Above it, the trail climbs to open meadows where wildflowers light up late summer and Rainier looms large. Push a bit higher and you’ll find broader vistas toward the Kautz Creek valley.

Wildlife

In and around the meadows, keep an eye out for marmots sunning on rocks, deer cruising the edges, and a variety of birds. When flowers peak, butterflies and native pollinators are common on warm afternoons.

Conditions to Expect

Early in the season, snow can linger and avalanche chutes can feel consequential—check current conditions before you go. The tread can be rocky, muddy, and occasionally roughened by winter debris. Bring layers; weather swings are real at these elevations.

Best Time to Visit

Late July through September is your sweet spot for snow‑free travel and wildflowers. Aim for early weekday mornings to secure a parking spot and enjoy quieter meadows. Weekends see steady traffic, especially during bloom.

Essentials and Tradeoffs

There are no facilities in the meadows—no water taps, tables, or toilets—so you’ll need to be self‑sufficient. The payoff is big scenery and, beyond the falls, a notable dip in crowds compared with the marquee areas of the park. If you want even bigger vistas, extend toward Mildred Point only if conditions and your comfort level line up.
