Overview

About Cypress Swamp

Why stop

  • Boardwalk carries you directly over the swamp
  • Compact stop with chances for wildlife

Heads up

  • Short experience unless paired with other Parkway stops
  • Insects can be unpleasant
This is an abandoned channel of the Pearl River, left behind when the river shifted course and dropped sediment across its old bed. Shallow standing water let water tupelo and bald cypress take root, and a raised boardwalk carries you out over it.

November may bring interesting fall color in the canopy and the water vegetation, which pairs well with reflections off the swamp. Pair it with other Parkway stops rather than driving out for this alone.

“You're coming up on Cypress Swamp, where a short boardwalk takes you into an old channel of the Pearl River. When the river shifted course, shallow water remained, and bald cypress and water tupelo took root.”

More about Cypress Swamp

What you'll see and doA short loop of roughly 0.4 to 0.
  • A short loop of roughly 0.4 to 0.5 miles, easy and nearly flat, crossing a bridge and threading through the swamp to a pond before returning to the parking area.
  • Dark still water and cypress trunks at close range, which is the main reason to bring a camera.
  • Possible wildlife: juvenile alligators sunning on floating logs and vegetation, plus turtles and wading birds. Exact sightings are not guaranteed.
  • Interpretive information on site explains how the channel and swamp formed.
A separate, much longer trailDirectly across the paved Parkway is the trailhead for the Yockanookany Section of the Natchez…

Directly across the paved Parkway is the trailhead for the Yockanookany Section of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail. That is a different hike from the swamp loop: 14.1 miles south to the West Florida Boundary, 8.9 miles north to the Yockanookany Trailhead, or any out-and-back distance you choose. Do not confuse the two if you only have a few minutes.

Practical tipsPlan on 10 to 30 minutes for the boardwalk, or about 20 minutes of walking time.
  • Plan on 10 to 30 minutes for the boardwalk, or about 20 minutes of walking time.
  • Go in daylight, since the boardwalk and the on-site interpretation are the whole experience, and light reaching through the canopy can be useful for photography.
  • Leashed dogs are allowed along the Parkway.
  • Auto parking is available at the site.
Honest limitsThis is a brief read-and-walk stop, not a half-day destination.

This is a brief read-and-walk stop, not a half-day destination. Some visitors find insects unpleasant, so carrying repellent is a reasonable precaution even though conditions vary.
