- Late fall through early spring is the honest recommendation, since bare branches open up far more of the distance than summer foliage allows
- Morning or late afternoon light gives the ridgelines separation; midday tends to flatten everything into one gray-green mass
- Shoot through gaps in the tree line rather than trying to capture a single wide frame, and include foreground branches instead of fighting them
