Blackwater Arboretum and Tall Trees

Overview

About Blackwater Arboretum

Why stop

  • Towering redwoods and mature conifers make the short walks memorable
  • Tactile sculptures add an engaging dimension to the tree collection

Heads up

  • The arboretum trails are short unless combined with the longer Tall Trees route
A compact tree collection on Rhinefield Ornamental Drive where conifers planted in the 1850s have grown into a nationally important collection, including some of the oldest Douglas fir trees in Britain and two enormous redwoods. The trees come from around the world, and a sensory sculpture trail inspired by the collection makes it more than a look-and-move-on stop.

Before you go

Best time to go

Visitors single out autumn foliage and sunny conditions as the most rewarding combination here. Come early in the morning and on a weekday for the quietest walk and the softest light under the tall conifers; the car park and the narrow loop feel busier through the middle of sunny days.

  • Tall Trees route around Blackwater: an accessible 1.5-mile walk of about half an hour, threading past the oldest conifers and the redwoods. This is the one to pick if the arboretum loop alone feels too brief.

The arboretum loop is genuinely short at half a mile, so on its own it can feel over almost as soon as it starts. Combine it with the 1.5-mile Tall Trees route to turn the visit into a proper walk rather than a quick detour.
