Hiking Discovery Trail at The Old Reptiliary

What the loop isThe Discovery Trail at The Old Reptiliary is a 1.

The Discovery Trail at The Old Reptiliary is a 1.1-mile circular walk from the car park picnic area and back. It takes about 25 to 30 minutes to walk, but allow close to an hour if children stop at the sensory points. It is an easy, hands-on woodland outing rather than a viewpoint hike. The former reptile centre no longer has animals to view, so the path itself is the reason to come.

Follow red posts through spruce and past a big stump, then among tall Douglas firs, young trees, bracken and deadwood. The loop reaches a pond before a giant log and an old chestnut tree whose branches spread like arms bring you back toward the start. In spring and summer, the pond may hold tadpoles or dragonflies; sightings depend on the season. Most of the route is smooth gravel, with grassy sections that can get muddy after rain. One short stretch is shared with a cycle trail, so watch for riders.

Access and effortStart at the picnic area beside The Old Reptiliary car park.

Start at the picnic area beside The Old Reptiliary car park. Red markers make the route easy to follow; toilets and picnic tables are close to the start. Dogs are welcome on Forestry England forest walks; keep them under control around wildlife and water. The car park and trail open seasonally during school and bank holidays. When the car park is shut, Millyford Bridge gives access at the pond, partway around this loop. The information cabin at the former centre is closed.
