Overview

If you’re heading into the backcountry, start here. The Wilderness Information Center (WIC) is the park’s go-to desk for permits, route advice, and safety briefings. It sits within the main Visitor Center campus in Port Angeles, so you can handle permits and then pop next door for exhibits and a quick orientation to the park.

What it does best

• Issues wilderness backpacking permits for the entire park
• Handles advance reservations for limited-use areas
• Lends bear canisters (a must in many zones)
• Provides detailed route planning, current trail conditions, and safety guidance, including Leave No Trace and food storage

What to expect on site

Expect a staffed counter, wall maps, and rangers who actually know what’s happening on the ground. Popular routes and camp zones are competitive during summer, so come with a Plan A and a Plan B. Because it’s in the Visitor Center complex, you also have exhibits, a Discovery Room for kids, and short walking paths right outside.

Common pain points

Midday in summer, the queue can creep. Limited-use areas and high-demand itineraries (think marquee valleys and basins) can book out, so flexibility is your friend.

• Shoulder seasons see lighter traffic, but always check conditions
