Warden's Path

Overview

Warden’s Path is the south‑bank half of a short loop along the Big Sur River, paired with the north‑bank River Path. Linked by pedestrian bridges near the Big Sur Lodge and Day Use Lot 2, the official River Path & Warden’s Path loop is about 0.6 mile total (a commonly walked variant measures roughly 0.65). It’s essentially flat, easy, and welcoming to just about everyone.

What you’ll see

Expect a mellow riparian woodland of sycamores, cottonwoods, and bay trees with the river close by—but not always right at your feet. The loop passes the Redwood Deck, an effortless boardwalk among impressively old redwoods (including the quirky “Proboscis Tree”), and you’ll find picnic spots nearby. The Ernst Ewoldsen Nature Center sits on the Warden’s Path side, adding a quick, accessible learning stop.

Trail logistics

Surface is a mix of hard‑packed path with short boardwalk and brief paved connectors. Elevation change is negligible (on the order of a few dozen feet for the combined loop). The loop is wheelchair‑ and stroller‑accessible. Dogs are allowed on Warden’s Path and the River Path (leash required), but not on the adjacent Nature Trail that some visitors combine with this walk. No bikes. A standard day‑use fee applies for vehicle entry.

Best time to hike

Thanks to abundant shade and its short, gentle grade, this is an easy year‑round leg‑stretcher when conditions are passable. The shade helps on warm days, and proximity to parking and services makes it a reliable low‑effort option in any season.

Tips

If you’re short on time or hiking with a stroller or wheelchair, start from Day Use Lot 2 or the lodge area for immediate bridge access. Don’t skip the Redwood Deck and its ancient giants. If you’re hiking with a dog, stick to Warden’s Path and the River Path and avoid the Nature Trail. For a longer outing afterward, the lodge area connects to the Pfeiffer Falls/Valley View trails.
