Overview
This is the park’s quick hit for big views with minimal mileage. The Valley View Trail pairs towering redwoods with a ridge‑top panorama over the Big Sur River Valley. Plan on about 2.5 miles round trip total (including the short connector from the day‑use lots) with roughly 500–550 feet of climbing. Most hikers also add the very short spur to Pfeiffer Falls for a two‑stop outing.
Route and scenery
From the day‑use area near the lodge, a shaded path follows a creek through redwoods, crossing footbridges and passing an interpretive “tree cookie” display. After about two‑thirds of a mile you’ll reach a signed split: left climbs the Valley View spur, right drops to Pfeiffer Falls. The ridge to Valley View is the steeper stretch—roots and built steps, pockets of oak and pine, and one bench before the real payoff. The overlook itself is a bench‑side viewpoint looking down the Big Sur Valley toward the coast. If you add the waterfall, it’s a short side trip to a roughly 60‑foot cascade set among ferns and mossy rock, best after winter rains.
Difficulty and trail conditions
Easy to moderate overall, but expect short, steeper pitches and a few eroded/rutted bits on the upper spur. Tread is narrow singletrack with stairs and roots. Poison oak grows trailside in sunnier patches—long sleeves help. Dogs and bikes are not allowed on these trails.
Best time to hike
Year‑round, this route mixes cool redwood shade with a sunnier ridge, so it’s friendly most days. Winter and early spring offer the strongest waterfall flow and wildflowers along the climb; mornings or late afternoon give softer light for the valley view. Day‑use hours run from 8 am to sunset, and weekends see the heaviest traffic—start early if you want a quieter overlook.
Logistics
Park in Day Use Lot #1 or #2, then follow the River Path/Redwood Deck to the clearly signed start by the lodge. A day‑use fee is required for vehicles, and cell service is spotty—download maps ahead of time. After storms, the Pfeiffer Falls Trail may be closed from one side, though the spur from the Valley View junction is often used when open; obey current signage. Rockslides can close stretches of Highway 1, so check road conditions before you go.
