Overview

P1 is the handy boat pier on Lake Kozjak that gets you into the Upper Lakes fast. If you’re starting near Entrance 2, this is the quick hop across to P2 so you can hit the boardwalks without a long approach.

How the boats work

Think of P1→P2 as a positioning shuttle—short, efficient, and included with your park ticket. The more scenic cruise is the longer P2↔P3 leg (about 20 minutes), also covered by your ticket. Schedules change by season, so check the day’s timetable at information points, and keep your ticket handy for boarding. Expect queues at peak times; early morning or late afternoon are much calmer.

Facilities at and around the pier

Right by the dock you’ll find a seasonal bistro with picnic tables—perfect for a quick refuel—plus restrooms (availability can fluctuate outside peak season). You can also rent rowboats from the P1 dock to explore Kozjak at your own pace. A steep stairway connects back toward the entrance area and nearby hotels.

What to pair it with

From Entrance 2, ride P1→P2 to step straight onto the Upper Lakes circuits. Save your camera time for after P2 and for the longer P2↔P3 crossing; the P1 hop is about speed, not scenery.

Weather and operations

Boats can slow or pause in heavy rain or during high water, and certain trails may temporarily close. If the lake traffic looks jammed midday, consider a rowboat rental for a quieter hour.

Context: the lakes and landscape

P1 sits in the Upper Lakes area, where waters flow over dolomite. The electric boats glide across Kozjak’s mineral‑rich, color‑shifting water. Swimming is prohibited to keep the lakes pristine. Beyond the shores, vast forests host deer, wolves, bears, and rare birds, though sightings are uncommon around the busy piers.

Best time to visit

  • Early: Catch the first boats for little to no wait and calm water.
  • Midday: Expect lines; it’s a good window for a rowboat or a picnic near the bistro.
  • Late afternoon: Crowds thin again and light softens nicely across Kozjak.

Quick tips

Use P1 as a springboard—don’t linger unless you’re grabbing a snack or a rowboat—so you can spend maximum time on the Upper Lakes boardwalks.

Pros

  • Shortest boat hop to reach Upper Lakes quickly
  • Rowboat rentals on Kozjak for a peaceful crowd break
  • Seasonal bistro and picnic tables right by the dock

Cons

  • Lines build around midday for the short shuttle
  • Seasonal operations; boats, bistro, and even restrooms can vary
  • Service may pause in heavy rain or high water

Tips

  • Start early or late to skip the P1→P2 line; midday is the bottleneck.
  • Keep your park ticket handy—boats are included but you’ll need to show it.
  • Check the day’s timetable at info points; frequencies change by season.
  • If crowds spike at noon, rent a rowboat from P1 for a peaceful hour on Kozjak.
  • Bad weather can halt boats; have a walking fallback from Entrance 2.
