Overview
Burgeti Rapids are a compact chain of lively, bubbling pools and cascades in the Upper Lakes. You’ll walk right alongside them on wooden boardwalks, watching water spill over low, porous travertine (tufa) rims. The name comes from the loud, burbling sound of the flow—exactly what you’ll hear up close.
What You’ll See
- Two main ponds, Veliki (Large) and Mali (Small) Burget, fed from Gradinsko Lake and stepping down toward Lake Kozjak.
- Clear, shallow water racing over mossy tufa ledges, with shrubs and trees tight to the banks.
- Colors that shift with minerals, organisms, and sun angle—from green to blue to silvery.
- An old stone structure nearby, a remnant of past attempts to harness the flow for electricity.
Geology, in Plain English
Plitvice is a slow river descending in steps made by tufa—rock that forms as mineral‑rich, slightly alkaline water deposits calcium carbonate onto moss, algae, and wood. Layer by layer, these living dams grow and reroute the current, creating the small, frothy drops that give Burgeti its character. It’s beautiful and fragile—stay on the boards.
Wildlife
Around the boards, watch for fish, frogs, crayfish, small water snakes, and, on lucky days, an otter slipping through the pools. The wider park shelters brown bear, grey wolf, and lynx, but sightings near the lakes are rare.
How to Visit
Follow the signed Upper Lakes routes; you’ll pass alongside or over Burgeti between Gradinsko and Kozjak. There are no toilets at the rapids—use facilities at the nearby transport hubs (like the Upper Lakes boat and shuttle stops) or at the park entrances. No swimming anywhere in the park, and always stay on the boardwalks to protect the tufa.
Photo Tips
Burgeti is all about details: mossy rims, fast little cascades, and ultra‑clear water. A polarizing filter helps cut glare and reveal the textures beneath the surface.
Best Time to Visit
