Overview

Entrance 1 is the park’s northern gateway and the dramatic start you’re hoping for. Within minutes you’re peering down into the Lower Lakes canyon and toward Veliki Slap (the park’s “Big Waterfall”), before dropping to the wooden boardwalks that skim emerald pools and cascades. If you’ve only got a few hours, this entrance delivers maximum wow per minute.

What You’ll See

From the rim, classic viewpoints unfold over the limestone canyon. Descend stairs to walk beside tufa (travertine) barriers and glass‑clear lakes where fish are easy to spot. Expect color shifts from azure to jade depending on light and minerals—photographers eat this up.

Route Choices From Here

You can start popular routes A, B, C and K1 from Entrance 1. Short on time? Do the Lower Lakes loop to the Big Waterfall and back. Got half a day? Follow the Lower Lakes to the P1 dock, cross Kozjak by electric boat, then ride the shuttle back—those rides are included with your park ticket.

Facilities & Logistics

At the gate you’ll find ticketing, an information desk, restrooms, and food options, plus paid parking nearby. There’s also a gift shop, ATM, and luggage storage, but offerings can be seasonal—arrive a bit early if you need services.

Best Time to Visit

Be at the entrance right at opening to have the boardwalks largely to yourself; late afternoon also thins out. Summer is gorgeous but busiest—book tickets in advance. Spring and autumn bring comfortable temps and full waterfalls. Winter is peaceful and cheaper, though some routes/boardwalks may be limited and hours are shorter. Typical opening is around 7:00 AM, but hours vary by season.

Wildlife & Etiquette

You’ll often see fish schooling in the Lower Lakes and hear birds along the canyon. Stay on marked paths, don’t feed wildlife, and remember some boardwalk sections have no rails—watch your footing and kids.

Photo Tips

The Big Waterfall can be backlit part of the day; morning or late afternoon light is kinder. A polarizing filter cuts glare and deepens the greens and blues on the lakes and cascades.

Pros

  • Instant views of Veliki Slap and the Lower Lakes boardwalks
  • Full services at the gate: tickets, info, restrooms, food, gift shop

Cons

  • The busiest entry point; queues and crowds spike late morning
  • Steep stair descent/ascent from rim viewpoints into the canyon

Tips

  • Book timed tickets in advance and arrive at opening to beat tour groups.
  • From the gate, hit the Big Waterfall viewpoint first, then descend to the boardwalks.
  • Pick Route B for a compact loop or Route C for the classic full circuit with boat and shuttle.
  • Use restrooms near the entrance and at boat docks or shuttle stops before longer stretches.
  • Parking opens around 7 AM; in high season it fills by late morning.
