Pros & cons

- Easy access from Entrance 1 via signed cliff‑edge paths
CONS
- No facilities at the lookouts themselves
- Stairs and damp sections can make footing slick
Overview
Perched on the eastern rim above the Lower Lakes, the Korana River Canyon Viewpoint delivers the classic cliff‑edge panoramas you see on postcards—looking toward Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall, 78 m) and the Sastavci cascades where the Korana River springs to life.
What You’ll See
Expect a deep limestone canyon scalloped with dramatic cliffs and turquoise water below. From here you can take in the Lower Lakes’ narrow gorge, with the river beginning just beneath the falls before flowing north. It’s a different vibe than the broader, softer Upper Lakes, which sit on impermeable dolomite.
Getting There
Start at Entrance 1 (Lower Lakes). Follow the park’s marked Program B to reach the cliff‑edge overlooks. A short, steep detour leads to the Veliki Slap viewpoint, and the higher “Cliff Views Trail” loops back toward Entrance 1 for sweeping canyon vistas with fewer crowds.
On‑Site Logistics
Don’t expect services right at the lookouts. Use restrooms and food options around the entrances, the P3 boat stop, or the ST1–ST3 shuttle stops before heading out. Parking is at Entrance 1 and fills early in peak season—arrive at opening time if you can.
Best Time to Visit
Go early when the park opens to enjoy quieter paths and easier parking. Seasonal hours and occasional winter closures can affect which sections are open, so check the official schedule in advance.
Geology & Context
Lower Lakes = permeable limestone and a tight, cliffed canyon; Upper Lakes = impermeable dolomite and wider basins. Plitvice became a national park in 1949 and a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. The Korana River forms below Sastavci and drops over multiple tufa barriers as it carves the canyon.
Rules and Etiquette
Stay on marked trails and boardwalks; no swimming in the lakes, no feeding wildlife, and pack out your trash. Drones are not permitted without prior authorization. Wear grippy footwear—stairs and mist from the falls can make surfaces slick.
