Kawuneeche Entrance Station

Overview

This is the west-side entry point on US-34 a short drive north of Grand Lake, about a quarter-mile north of the Kawuneeche Visitor Center. It’s a straightforward gate with two booths where rangers check or sell park passes and answer quick questions. It’s generally a mellower entrance than the east side, but brief lines can form on busy days.

Why start here

From this gate you roll right into the wildlife-rich Kawuneeche Valley and up Trail Ridge Road toward the Continental Divide and Alpine Visitor Center. Key west-side stops—Holzwarth Historic Site, Coyote Valley Trail, Colorado River Trail, Green Mountain, and Onahu Trail—are all accessed from this side.

Timed-entry essentials (2025)

From May 23–Oct 13, 9 a.m.–2 p.m., you need a Timed Entry reservation to enter any area of the park (including this entrance). If you’re heading for the Bear Lake Road Corridor on the east side, you’ll need the separate Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road permit between 5 a.m.–6 p.m. (May 23–Oct 19). Reservations have a two-hour entry window, cost a $2 processing fee, and must be booked in advance on the official reservation platform—not at entrance stations or visitor centers.

Practical details

Have your park pass and photo ID ready. This entrance accepts credit/debit cards only. If you need restrooms, maps, exhibits, a small bookstore, or ranger trip-planning help, the Kawuneeche Visitor Center is just south of the gate and generally operates daily in summer; its west-side Wilderness Office typically runs extended hours late May through Oct 31.

Wildlife & scenery

The valley beyond the gate is known for wildlife; rangers at the nearby visitor center often share current sighting tips and the exhibits spotlight the west side’s animals. Early and late in the day are your best bets for sightings and emptier roads.

Current conditions

Work is underway on the Grand Lake (west-side) entrance ranger station; at least one lane remains open in and out during construction, but expect occasional slowdowns.

Best time to visit

• Without a reservation, aim to enter before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m.
• Early or late offers better wildlife viewing and lighter traffic.
• On peak weekends and midday, expect short waits at the booths.
• When Trail Ridge Road is closed for the season, the nearby visitor center’s heated restrooms are a welcome stop.
