Kawuneeche Visitor Center is Rocky Mountain National Park’s only visitor center on the west side, beside US 34 about a mile north of Grand Lake at the park entrance. It’s a useful first stop before exploring the Kawuneeche Valley or crossing the park: get oriented with a map, ask the ranger staff about your plans, and use the public flush restrooms. Parking is beside the building.
Inside, exhibits cover local plants and animals, and a large three-dimensional map lays out the park. The center also has a theater, maps, a park newspaper and ranger-staffed information. Visitors often praise the staff’s help, so bring questions about where to go before you set out.
The Rocky Mountain Conservancy operates a nature store here, with books and park-themed goods. The center is also a passport-stamp location, which makes it a handy stop for both trip planning and a quick look around.
The center opened in 1990 after the Rocky Mountain Nature Association, now the Rocky Mountain Conservancy, raised about $300,000 for its construction. Its exhibits and large park map still introduce visitors to the west side before they head out.
