Expect roughly 3.0 miles total from the Bierstadt Lake Trailhead (looping the shore adds about 0.8 miles) with around 600–675 feet of gain. Most hikers will spend 1.5–2 hours. It’s generally easy to moderate: the initial mile climbs steadily; the loop around the lake is mostly flat.
Route Options
From the Bierstadt Lake Trailhead on Bear Lake Road, you’ll zig‑zag up the Bierstadt Moraine through lodgepole pine and pockets of aspen before meeting the lakeshore loop. Many hikers go left around the lake for the best mountain backdrop from the far side. Prefer a gentler approach and more amenities? Start at Bear Lake and connect to Bierstadt Lake, then finish at the Bierstadt TH and use the shuttle back. Point‑to‑point via the Park & Ride is also common.
What You’ll See
The climb opens broad views over Moraine Park and toward the Continental Divide (Flattop, Hallett, and Otis make the skyline). Up top, the shallow lake is ringed by sedges and pine, with limited, marshy shore access in spots—stay on established paths. Wildlife shows up here: moose wander the wetlands and ducks work the water. In fall, aspen along the approach light up gold.
Best Time to Hike
Start early for calmer reflections, cooler temps on the switchbacks, and easier parking. Summer and early fall are the sweet spot; fall colors can be excellent. In winter, this is a popular snow hike—pack traction (microspikes) or snowshoes as conditions dictate and keep an eye on weather. During the peak season (roughly mid‑May to mid‑October), the Bear Lake Road corridor uses timed entry; arriving before 9 am or after 2 pm can simplify access.
Logistics & Tips
Parking is limited at the Bierstadt Lake Trailhead, but there are restrooms. The free park shuttle serves Bear Lake Road and makes point‑to‑point options painless—avoid retracing steps and skip parking stress. Bring water and sun protection; the switchbacks are exposed in places and altitude makes the climb feel bigger. Mosquitoes can be active near the lake in season. Watch junctions around the lake—multiple signed connectors lead to Bear Lake, Park & Ride, and back to the trailhead. Pets are not allowed on this trail.
