Sprague Lake

Sprague Lake is an alpine lake on Bear Lake Road, known for a short walk around the water and views toward the Continental Divide. The loop is roughly three-quarters of a mile at 8,701 feet. Keep it on your list if you want a lake-and-mountain visit without signing up for a long hike.

There are 27 picnic tables near the parking area, a vault toilet that is open year-round, and a seasonal flush restroom with water. No food concession is listed at the lake, so bring picnic food if you want to eat here.

The loop gives you changing views instead of one single overlook. From the east shore, the water opens toward the surrounding peaks along the Continental Divide. Benches and small lookout points make it easy to pause on the way around.

Abner Sprague first came to the Estes Valley as a surveyor in 1868 and made Moraine Park his home by the late 1870s. He and his wife, Alberta, turned guest lodging into a ranch business. After selling that business, Sprague built a lodge in Glacier Basin and dammed a creek to make a fish pond that still bears his name. His story is part of the early visitor trade that grew in the park.

The east shoreline gives the clearest mountain-and-water framing, and the loop offers more than one angle. Visitors especially mention sunrise and reflections, so take a little time to see how the light is falling before you settle on a view.
