Gibraltar Rock

Overview

Gibraltar Rock is a handsome sandstone overhang tucked beside the old Lady Carrington Drive—complete with a rare cobbled carriageway section—and peeks across the Hacking River. It’s a low‑effort, high‑charm stop that pairs well with a picnic by the water.

What You’ll See

Expect a shady rock shelter right off the historic track and river glimpses where you might spot kayakers sliding by. Keep an ear out for sulphur‑crested cockatoos; they’re regulars here. It’s more about ambience than a grand lookout, and that’s the appeal.

Getting There

From Willow Tree Flat, it’s about 900 m return (roughly 45 minutes at a dawdle). Starting from Audley makes it about 2.2 km return. Easiest parking is at Fig Tree Flat/Willow Tree Flat at the northern end of Lady Carrington Drive; there’s also parking at the southern end off Sir Bertram Stevens Drive.

There are no amenities at the rock. Head to Willow Tree Flat (picnic shelter, BBQs, tap water, bins, toilets, parking) or Wattle Forest (picnic tables, free BBQs, drinking water and parking). Additional facilities and information are at the Royal National Park Visitor Centre at Audley.

Best Time to Visit

Crowds are generally light on weekday mornings, with busier patches in late afternoons and on weekends. If you’re planning an evening wander, note that parts of the park close between sunset and sunrise Monday–Thursday for a deer control program through December 19, 2025—check current park alerts before you go.

Need to Know

Park entry fees apply (listed as $12 per vehicle per day). Mobile reception along the valley is unreliable, so sort maps and meeting points before you drop in. This is a quick scenic detour, perfect when you want nature and a bit of history without the sweat.
