Pros & cons
PROS
- Train‑to‑trail start from Heathcote Station—no car shuffle required
- Mid‑walk freshwater swim at Karloo Pool on hot days
- Option to continue to Waterfall Station for a satisfying point‑to‑point
CONS
- Track becomes boggy and slow after rain
- Slippery rock around pools and no facilities until Uloola Falls campground
- Patchy mobile reception along the route
Park on the eastern side of Heathcote Station; spaces fill on weekends. Easiest is to arrive by train and walk about 5 minutes to the signed trailhead.
Rocks are slick near Karloo Pool and Uloola Falls; the track can be boggy after rain. Limited mobile reception—carry water and sun protection. Check park alerts: total fire bans can close tracks, and some areas close after sunset Monday–Thursday for deer control (Jul 7–Dec 19, 2025). Pets are not permitted.
Overview
A classic Royal National Park bushwalk, the Karloo Walking Track runs from Heathcote Station to Uloola Falls. It’s a 10 km return (6.2 miles total) track that typically takes 3–5 hours. Expect a formed but rocky path with short, steep pinches and plenty of steps—moderate overall, but it asks for sure footing and a little bushwalking experience.
Route and highlights
From Heathcote Station, the signed track undulates through coastal heath and eucalypt forest, with sandstone shaping the scenery—look for the smooth “whaleback” rock outcrops and the Uloola Turrets. Karloo Pool appears about halfway to the falls (roughly 2.5 km from the start), a clear freshwater swimming hole with flat rock slabs perfect for a break. Continue on to the small, tiered Uloola Falls for a quieter lunch spot. Return the same way for the standard 10 km, or link the Uloola walking track to finish at Waterfall Station as a point‑to‑point day if you’ve planned transit.
Difficulty and trail conditions
The surface is uneven and can be boggy after rain. Rocks near pools and falls are slippery, and shade is patchy—carry water and sun protection. Mobile reception can be limited in sections, so don’t rely on bars for navigation or calls.
Best time to hike
Spring brings wildflowers across the heath; summer is prime for a cooling dip at Karloo Pool. Start early on warm days—Karloo Pool gets busy around midday on summer weekends. Royal National Park generally operates within set daily hours and may close during bad weather or high fire danger.
Logistics and tips
- Access is hard to beat: step off the train at Heathcote and you’re on trail within minutes. If you prefer to drive, fees apply for vehicle entry to the park (per‑vehicle day rate).
- Uloola Falls campground is nearby; book ahead if you plan to stay overnight. Toilets are at the campground only—there are none at Karloo Pool.
- Always check park alerts before you go. Total fire bans can close walking tracks, and some areas may be closed between sunset and sunrise Monday–Thursday for a deer control program (July 7–December 19, 2025).
