Palm Jungle Lookout

Overview

Tucked on the clifftops above the rainforest gullies, Palm Jungle Lookout is the locally used name for Werrong Lookout—a breezy vantage that breaks out of the dense cabbage‑tree palm canopy for sweeping views of Werrong Beach and the Pacific. It’s not flashy or heavily signed, and that’s the charm: a natural balcony mid‑hike where you can catch your breath and watch the surf.

Why go

This is the payoff on the Palm Jungle section of the Coast Track: coastal cliffs, open grasslands, and a sudden reveal of beach and bush in one frame. If you’re walking the loop, it’s the best place to pause before or after the rainforest climb.

Getting there

You can reach the lookout on the Palm Jungle Loop Track from two common starts:

• Garrawarra Farm car park: ~8.2 km loop, about 2.5–3 hours clockwise—descend to Burning Palms first, traverse the coast, then climb through Palm Jungle and finish on the flat ridge fire trail.
• Otford Lookout: a longer, rougher option (around 10 km for the loop), with steeper sections on the Otford side.

The lookout itself is unsigned near the top of the Palm Jungle climb; keep an eye out for the clifftop opening with views to Werrong Beach.

Trail notes

Expect a mix of natural path, stone steps and pockets of boardwalk. The jungle section can feel steamy even on mild days, and it turns muddy and slippery after rain. Good grip underfoot pays off.

Nature & wildlife

You’ll transition from tall eucalypt forest to cool, palm‑lined gullies before emerging at the cliffs. Birdlife is a feature here—listen for Eastern whipbirds, green catbirds, spinebills, New Holland honeyeaters and little wattlebirds; lyrebirds are possible but more reliable elsewhere in the park. In season, wildflowers dot the track edges.

Facilities & fees

There are no facilities at the lookout or along the loop. The nearest toilets are at Garrawarra Farm car park. Bring all the water you need. Royal National Park operates with a per‑vehicle day fee, and vehicle gates typically open at 7:00am and close at 8:30pm.

Pair it with

Burning Palms Beach and the heritage‑listed shack community are just down the track. If you’re considering the detour to Figure Eight Pools, only go at low tide and low swell, and skip it if conditions are unsafe.

Best time to visit

Start early if you’re doing the full loop or visiting in winter when daylight is shorter. If adding Figure Eight Pools, plan around low tide and benign swell; otherwise the lookout itself works well at any time during gate‑open hours.
