Overview

If you like immersive forest walking over sweeping lookouts, Wallumarra Track delivers. It drops from heathland on the plateau through eucalypt/apple woodland into lush subtropical rainforest along Bola Creek. The core track is 2.9 miles one way (from Sir Bertram Stevens Drive down to Lady Carrington Drive near Bola Creek). Most people either walk it out-and-back (5.8 miles total) or fold it into a longer circuit with the historic Forest Path (about 7.8 miles total). Expect atmosphere and botany variety rather than vistas.

Route Snapshot

Start near the stone gates where Lady Carrington Drive meets Sir Bertram Stevens Drive. The trail begins as a fire trail across heath, then narrows to a foot track as it descends. In the rainforest, you’ll cross Bola Creek a couple of times, then meet vehicle-free Lady Carrington Drive. For the circuit, turn right briefly on Lady Carrington Drive, then left onto the Forest Path to loop around Forest Island before returning to the Wallumarra junction and climbing back to the start.

What You’ll See

The vegetation shifts are the star: windswept heath up high, then smooth‑barked apple/eucalypt woodland, and finally tall‑palm rainforest along Bola Creek. The creek section is all about mood—ferns, palms, filtered light, and the sound of water. Keep an eye (and ear) out for birds like Sacred Kingfisher, Golden Whistler, and Rufous Whistler. Bola Picnic Area sits beside the creek if you want a shaded snack stop.

Difficulty and Conditions

Overall, this is a moderate Grade 3 walk: mostly downhill to the creek, with the return climb to finish if you’re doing it as a return or circuit. Surfaces vary—gravel service road, narrow singletrack, rock steps, boardwalks—and rocks near the creek can be slippery. In wet weather the rainforest section can host plenty of leeches; waiting a day or two after rain makes it more comfortable. Not wheelchair or stroller friendly, and reception can be patchy.

Tips and Tricks

  • Footwear: closed shoes with decent grip; consider gaiters/repellent after rain.
  • Navigation: watch for the Forest Path turn shortly after joining Lady Carrington Drive; on the way back, rejoin Wallumarra to climb out.
  • Variants: From the creek, strong walkers sometimes continue south toward Palona Cave for a tougher day.

Best Time to Hike

Year‑round works, but drier spells shine thanks to fewer leeches and less slick rock. The shaded rainforest stays pleasant even on warm days. Weekdays feel especially tranquil. No permit needed for day walking, but standard vehicle entry fees apply in the park. Pets aren’t allowed on this track (assistance animals excepted).

Pros

  • Distinct vegetation transitions from heath to tall‑palm rainforest
  • Easy link-ups: Forest Path circuit or longer Palona Cave extension

Cons

  • No sweeping views despite the effort
  • Leeches common after rain in the rainforest section

Parking

Park along Sir Bertram Stevens Drive near the stone gates at the junction with Lady Carrington Drive; the track starts from this area.

Caution

Uneven surfaces, rock steps, and slippery rocks near Bola Creek; leeches after rain—consider waiting a day or two post‑rain; limited mobile reception; no pets.
