Sentinel Tree

Sentinel Tree is a named giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) in the plaza in front of Giant Forest Museum. It makes an easy add-on to a museum visit: step into the plaza, look up, and take in a whole tree in a short stop.

A sidewalk ruler marks the Sentinel’s height, and a nearby wayside compares it with other giant sequoias. Walk the ruler, then look back at the tree; the scale makes more sense when you can compare them directly. The “Just Average?” framing is useful: the Sentinel is imposing, while other trees in the grove are larger.

For a photo, include the lower trunk and a person or the ruler for scale. A close bark shot hides what makes this stop interesting.

Older published measurements put the tree at about 257.6 feet tall, with roughly 27,900 cubic feet of trunk volume. These are reference figures rather than current park measurements, but they help put the trunk and crown in perspective.

Find the museum on Generals Highway (CA 198); the tree is right above its plaza. Parking is beside the museum and in an upper lot across the road. The plaza surface is firm and stable but slightly sloped, and the height ruler is wheelchair accessible. There’s a bottle filler in the plaza; accessible restrooms are across the road. The museum adds hands-on exhibits, films, and ranger programs if you want to stay longer.
